CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Natalie wiped a large magnet over another hard drive, and she could have almost cried. They were keeping a copy of everything of course, but they couldn’t protect all of it and they needed to make sure the NSA couldn’t get any more information.

Francisco was helping Rich narrow down what they could take with them and what they couldn’t. They’d packed a large rucksack that the werewolf had offered to carry for them with the most precious or expensive of the gear. Natalie was wiping the hardware and trying to make sure she didn’t miss anything.

They were hurrying as fast as they could to get it all destroyed and sorted. After that, they would throw some clothes into bags and get out of there.

“We’ll need to sort stuff for Lucas as well,” Natalie reminded them, hoping he wouldn’t wish they had done something different. There were parts of the software he had coded. But most importantly, there was hardware he had exclusively been responsible for. They had to make decisions without him and it wasn’t easy.

As they worked, Rich kept running his hands through his hair, making it stand on end. Every time he had to make a decision about what to keep or not he paused and did the same thing again.

“I don’t know if all of this is right,” he said when Francisco asked about yet another piece of hardware from Lucas’ desk.

“This was not something you expected at all?” the werewolf asked.

“Not even slightly. We were making an AR device. Never intended to find anything out of the ordinary. Definitely nothing the NSA would be interested in.”

“Will they come after all of us, this NSA?” Francisco asked as he frowned.

“Depends if they know about you already. They might, and might want our tech. They might not, and be curious or surprised.” Rich shrugged.

“Who might be curious or surprised?” Alia’s voice came from the door and made them all jump.

“NSA,” Natalie replied, putting the magnet down.

Alia hadn’t heard of them, and they spent the next few minutes trying to explain. The more they said, the wider her eyes grew. A frown spread on her face.

“This sounds bad.”

“Until we can figure out how bad and stop it, we need to go somewhere else.” Natalie came closer, hugging Alia. “I’m sorry. It looks like we may have inadvertently made your home unsafe.”

Alia exhaled, but she perked up a little.

“It’s okay. I usually have to move every few months. I was well overdue looking for somewhere new. You guys bought me more time here than I usually get anywhere.”

Alia smiled but she looked around the house and Natalie saw the sadness in her eyes. The longer a person lived somewhere, the more attached to it they usually became. Natalie didn’t doubt that Alia had become fond of the place.

“Hopefully we can find somewhere else together.” Natalie felt fear creep through her. There was a lot to navigate first.

“If I don’t know what they know, picking a new place may be pointless,” Alia suggested.
